Climb for Diabetes

“You don’t set out to
climb the mountain; your head stays down and you focus on one step, then the
next, so on and so forth… and when you look up, you will see the world from a
top the summit.”
“Nothing is
Impossible. Dream Big. Explore.”
My ensuing goal is to give back to my
grandmother and family members, Dan Zolotorofe, and everyone other human being who has either succumbed to or
are fighting against Diabetes. I want to make their lives easier and less
complicated by assisting the research towards cures, treatments and ultimately,
prevention. Whether it in my time or my grandchildren’s time; I want to be able
to say that I did not stand idly by as my family and others had to fight
against it. As Thomas Paine stated, “If there must be trouble, let it be in my
time, so that my child may have peace.”
Diabetes has affected my family beyond belief and I do not
want other people having to go through the same struggles. Grandma Carole spent the
summer of 2012 living with us before she passed away on September 7 of that
year, in our living room right before I came home from work. This date is
forever tattooed over my heart because of the woman she was and the man she
molded in me.
Ever since I first laid eyes on a photograph of the glistening,
snow covered peaks of Denali (Mt. McKinley as known in America); I knew I
wanted to be one of the few human beings that get the chance to stand a top the
tallest mountain in North America. My love for the outdoors has led me to
believing this is no longer a far away dream, but an event on my calendar. So that’s exactly what I did; I decided once
and for all that I would climb the beast of this continent.
While researching guides and training course, I came across previous
fundraising and awareness climbs done by large non-profit organizations.
Ironically, this happened to be on the year to date that my grandmother passed
away. This beautiful woman, along with a handful of other family members, had
Diabetes. The light bulb flashed and my vision came true… I am going to use my
blessing of a healthy life to do the unimaginable while raising money and
awareness for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation through the DZ
Foundation. So here it is… my childhood dream and opportunity to help others
meshed together.
Through sponsorships, T-shirt sales, and
various other fundraising events, my goal is to raise $10,000 towards the DZ
Foundation. This local non-profit corporation “raises funds (a) to support the
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s effort to find a cure for this disease
that took Dan’s life; and (b) to award a $500 scholarship in Dan’s name to a
graduating Mahwah High School senior each year” (DZ Foundation). Of the total funds
accrued, 50% will go towards the thorough research and scholarship opportunity
within the foundation itself, while the other 50% will be placed towards the
expedition fee to assist in offsetting my own personal expenses.
